Charlie Newall who served 26 consecutive years as a Stawell Councillor and two terms as Shire Mayor was awarded with a jewel for 75 years of service to Freemasons Victoria.

The 97-year-old was acknowledged during a service at the Goodwin Retirement Village at Donald on Sunday.
Mr Newall joined Freemasonry in 1942 at 22-years-old and was also a member of the RAAF Reserve at the time.
With Japan’s entry into World War II, Mr Newall was immediately transferred into the RAAF Air Crew as a wireless operator and navigator in twin engine bombers.
During the intervening time between reserve and service in the RAAF, Mr Newall became a Freemason, joining the Marnoo Masonic Lodge.
Secretary and Stawell resident Neil Thornton said Mr Newall was a valued member and attained the senior office of Right Worshipful Brother for his 75 years of service.
“The 75-year service jewels are quite rare because no body normally lives that long,” he said.
“There have been a few of these across the state, but not too many at all.”
Mr Thornton said Mr Newall was a “beacon” in Freemasonry and deserved the honour.
“He is such a good man, not only for Freemasons, but to the community,” he said.
Mr Newall was also the secretary of the Marnoo RSL and supported many town events.
“He was community minded- a great community stalwart indeed,” Mr Thornton said.
“To be a Councillor for the area for that long is quite an achievement in itself also.”
Mr Newall thanked his wife Joy for her “devotion, love and support” during their 68 years of marriage.
Mr Thornton said he was a great family man on top of his community-spirited character.
“He has a personality many people would look to and say, he is a fine man,” he said.
“At 97-years-old Charlie still has a keen mind, being able to record events throughout his busy and fulfilling life.
“On behalf of Marnoo Masonic Lodge we are truly grateful to have Charlie.”
