Mr Tehan’s comments came after audio of former prime minister Tony Abbott criticising the budget and cabinet leadership group were leaked to Fairfax Media.

“I have been out and about in my electorate...the message I am getting loud and clear from the community is that they don’t want us to talk about ourselves,” Mr Tehan told Sky News on Wednesday.

“They want us talking about what we’re doing to deliver for the community.”

Mr Tehan’s comments came just hours after the latest media reporting of the Liberal Party’s internal battle between Mr Abbott and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Mr Abbott told a Liberal Party branch meeting in Melbourne that Turnbull government ministers did not believe in the "second-best, taxing and spending" budget they had been forced to deliver.

"Just at this moment, let me tell you, we're at a bit of a low ebb," he told the Melbourne meeting.

"If you listen to some senior members of the government, because of the reality – the unfortunate reality – of the Senate, we have had to bring forward a budget which is second-best. A taxing and spending budget.”

Factional tensions were set off last week when audio of Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne was leaked.

In the audio, Mr Pyne boasted about the influence of socially moderate Liberals under Mr Turnbull’s leadership.

“Friends, we are in the winner's circle but we have to deliver a couple of things and one of those we've got to deliver before too long is marriage equality in this country," Mr Pyne said.

Mr Tehan suggested Coalition members should talk about the federal government’s recent policies.

“I’d look at my community: $1.6 billion into rural and regional that the Turnbull government has provided to improve passenger rail,” he said.

“That’s a huge win for country Victorians and that’s what they want us focused on as a government: what we are doing and what we are delivering.

“If we do that, then we present a real case.”

Mr Tehan appeared to contradict Mr Abbott’s claim in the leaked audio that the government was facing too much difficulty in passing legislation through a hostile senate.

“Governments have always worked with the senate to get their agenda through,” Mr Tehan said.

“If you look at what we have got through in the last year, it’s significant.

“We have cut government spending, we have put more resources in national security, we have improved the situation in regards to Medicare, we have had the big education bill get through.”

Mr Tehan said Coalition members needed to get out into the community and sell to people what new legislation meant for them and their lives.
