The Green Hill Lake Development Board has received a permit from Ararat Rural City Council to proceed with a new picnic shelter at the Green Hill Lake playground area.
Board member Chris Traynor said the shelter will be an ideal accompaniment to the lake precinct to encourage families to enjoy a barbecue and a play on the adventure playground or just enjoy the lake.
“It is the dual benefit of improving facilities for those who already enjoy the lake and attracting new users as well as making the space more flexible for all weather conditions,” she said.
The construction has been made possible by a donation from the Grampians Aquatic Club in conjunction with the Green Hill Lake Development Board.
Ms Traynor said the Grampians Aquatic Club, which she is also a member of, had generously donated funds for the shelter project over many years.
“It was the club’s intention to spend the money at Green Hill Lake to improve the facilities for the benefit of all users,” she said.
“We’ve had fundraisers over the years and the outcome of that was to have a shelter out there for the whole community to use.”
The shelter will feature two free gas barbecues for quick cooking.
“The barbecues will be run by gas bottles supplied by the Green Hill Lake Development Board,” Ms Traynor said.
“They’ll change the bottle so there’ll be no cost to the public.”
The concrete slab for the shelter is due to be poured soon.
Ms Traynor said the works were expected to take about a month.
“It’s pegged out and waiting to go, we’re just waiting for the concrete, which should hopefully happen this weekend” she said.
“We have purchased the shelter and that’s here ready to go up but we need the slab first. We’re doing it ourselves with the help of a builder.”
“For safety reasons, please do not enter the construction site.”
