At least five businesses have been hit, with the offender or offenders concentrating on cash and any valuable small items.

Ararat Police Detective Senior Constable Detective Senior Constable Gjalt Erkeles said the thieves have been entering shops from rear doors.

“We have had a few break-ins at commercial premises, mainly in Barkly Street,” he said.

“During these burglaries it appears they are looking for any small change or money or anything valuable.

“At this point, nothing of significant value has been taken but its is stressful experience for the businesses and it affects their day-to-day activities.”

Det Sen Cons Erkeles said at this time, police did not have any security camera footage of the burglaries.

“A number of businesses in Barkly Street have cameras but unfortunately with these cases the businesses did not have cameras or the back entrance was not covered,” he said.

Narcissus Flowers & Gifts owner Wilma McAdie said her shop was broken into about three weeks ago and about $600 was taken

“I came in at about 7am and I noticed the money container wasn’t where it was supposed to be,” she said. 

“I thought I might have moved it or taken it home. I left to deliver flowers and when I returned I saw they had broken through the back door but closed it again so I didn’t notice at first.

“They also tried to break into the flat next door.”

Ms McAdie said there had been a psychological impact as well as a financial one.

“I had a bit of difficulty coming into the shop the next day as it’s a bit unnerving,” she said.

“I’ve been in business for 25 years and this is the first time I have had a break in.

“If someone knows something they should talk to the police.”
