The producer of Art Play Sunday, Elaine Uebergang, said there would be a lot of activities for children between kindergarten and primary school age to work through.
“When they arrive, they will receive a passport with all the activities on it, which they can tick off once they have completed each one,” Ms Uebergang said.
Activities include making African UV street soccer balls, learning circus tricks, face painting and dancing at the UV disco.
Ms Uebergang said organisers had planned the event in a way that ensured the children always had something to do.
“I think a good day is when there are no gaps and you can’t get around to doing everything,” Ms Uebergang said.
There will be a designated playgroup area for toddlers that will allow parents to watch them as they play.
In the playgroup area, there will be face painting, arts and crafts and healthy snacks all afternoon.
From 3pm to 4pm the Mark Penzak and Blueboat Theatre will put on their production of Journey to the Centre of the Earth.
The performance follows Axel and his uncle, Professor Lidenbrock, on an expedition through caves, caverns and oceans to find the centre of the earth and return safely home.
Journey to the Centre of the Earth has been performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and throughout Scotland, England, Ireland and Australia.
“We want this to be a day of fun for all ages and get them to use their hands and imagination,” Ms Uebergang said.
Ms Uebergang said children were the future of art – and using their imagination was preferable to sedentary options such as watching TV.
“In 20 years time, hopefully, the kids that attend could be running the event,” Ms Uebergang said.
Art Play Sunday starts at 1pm with activities running until 3pm, followed by the show until 4pm.
Ms Uebergang said tickets cost $10 per child, which gave them access to the show and free all-day activities.
She said adult tickets cost $5, which gave them access to the show.
