The council is still in negotiations with the Ararat Musical Comedy Society in regards to leasing the building.
A petition signed by 166 people, 111 from the Ararat township, was delivered to the council on April 18 expressing concern about potential uses of the McDonald Centre.
Cr Hooper said petitioners wanted the hall for various clubs and people to utilise rather than to be leased to the Ararat Musical Comedy Society.
The reuse of the building has been discussed since 2012, and even then had not been used for a number of years.
“The petition will have to lie on the table for a month and will be subject to the officers report at the meeting in June, where we’ll hear from those who created it.” Ararat mayor Paul Hooper said.
