Stawell played a first home game, Horsham Demons travelled to Warrnambool and the Horsham Saints remained at Coughlin Park.

STAWELL Warriors played in front a home crowd at Central Park for the first time ever on Sunday but things did not go to plan on the field.

The Mother’s Day ended with the Hamilton Kangaroos coming away 99 to 0 winners.

Warriors coach Andrew Bach said although the team did not perform at their best, the day as a whole was successful.

“There was a good crowd and good support for both sides on Mother’s Day,” he said.

Bach said the Stawell girls know they are better than what Sunday’s  performance showed.

“The girls were a bit disappointed with themselves,” he said.

“Both myself and the girls know that we can play a lot better than we did against Hamilton.”

Stawell had seven scoring shots in their round one match against Horsham.

Bach said he believes his team is capable of putting in more solid performances.

“We need to get back to what we know they can do,” he said.

“The girls looked like a different side compared to the first week.”

The side will continue to work on certain aspects of its game before round three.

“We let our opposition get the ball too easily,” Bach said.

“They have to be confident in themselves and back themselves in to win their own footy.”

Crystal Summers was best on ground for Stawell.

“Crystal had a really good game at centre-half-back,” he said.

“Our defence did a really good job of being able to repel repeated attacks.”

Stawell will host South Warrnambool at Central Park in round three.

A FIRST road trip for the Horsham Demons girls proved when the team could not come away with the points against South Warrnambool on Sunday.

The Roosters chalked up a first win of the season by defeating the Demons by 26-points.

Coach Terry Arnel said the side was beaten by a team that was better on the day.

“We need to keep improving our ability to move the ball,” he said.

“That is something that will continue to develop the more we play.”

Arnel said he will continue to keep it simple for his side moving forward and that travelling to play was a new experience.

Prior to the season he spoke about wanting to provide the his team with an idea of what being part of a football team was like.

“This is another one of those things,” he said.

“Travelling to a new ground and being in different change rooms can take a bit of getting used to.

“That’s all part of the experience.”

Penny Drummond played well in Horsham’s backline.

“She read the ball well and marked strongly,” Arnel said.

“Steph Golver and Abby Hallam also played well as they carried the ball through the midfield.”

The Demons will be back at home against Portland in round three.

THE Horsham Saints put in another strong performance in the second round against a tough Portland team at Coughlin Park.

Both side managed wins in the first round but it was the Saints side which came out on top in a 41-12 win.

Saints coach Matt Taylor said it was a good win by his side.

“It was an even first quarter but we got a few quick goals in the second to open up a lead,” he said.

The Saints side was missing some of its taller players but Kaytelan Harris stepped up in a big way for the side.

Danae Martin and Tara Jasper were also standout players for the home side.

Taylor said Jasper provided one of the highlights of the game when she went back and slotted a goal from 40 metres out.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said.

“We all expected her to go back and give it off, it was a big, big kick.”

Taylor continued to be impressed by how the side had developed.

“The players are starting to learn a bit more about how to play the game and position themselves,” he said.

“We can teach them skills and other things like that but the other side of the game is something they learn themselves.

“It’s very pleasing to see that part of their game develop.”

The Saints are on the road for the first time in round three. The side will travel to take on the Warrnambool Blues.
