Great Western v Wickliffe-Lake Bolac
A YOUNG and improving Lions side could not match Wikcliffe-Lake Bolac on Saturday.
Playing away from home Great Western were on the wrong side of the 14.18 (102) to 7.7 (49) at the end of the game.
Lions coach Will Bell said it was good his young side continued to show signs of improvement.
“We have a lot of young players in and added Riley Thomas to the side for his first game as well,” he said.
“He bobbed up to kick two goals in the last quarter so that was great.”
A strong breezed helped the Magpies fly out to a 30-point lead in the first quarter.
Great Western showed fight to win the second quarter but could only manage to cut the margin by a point.
“Both sides struggled to get it out of their back line kicking into the breeze,” Bell said.
“I would have liked us to make more of the opportunities when it was stuck in our half but that is part of the learning curve.”
The Magpies were back on top in the third quarter as Great Western managed just one point and it was a 52-point margin at the final break.
The Lions continued to battle before eventually going down by 53 points.
“You still a lot of positive out of it,” Bell said.
“Last season the margin was in excess of a 100 points. We see glimpses of great ball movement, we just need to put it together more often.”
Aiden Lee was best on ground for the Lions.
