The visitors started the game strongly, opening up a narrow lead against the reigning premiers to go into the first break 7-6.
The Grasshoppers scored eight goals in the second term but the Saints were not to be ourdone, scoring 11 goals to stretch the margin to four at the long break.
The home team settled into the game in the second half and scored 11 goals in the third term while keeping the Saints to nine goals to halve the margin going into the final term.
It was a tense final term with neither team able to gain a clear advantage on the scoreboard.
Navarre fell just short of victory at the final whistle, as Trentham claimed the points 38-37.
Sophie Flood was named the Grasshoppers’ best while Taylor Mason led the way in the goal circle, scoring 22.
The reigning premiers face Harcourt in round two.
