MORE than 100 sheep died after a semi-trailer rolled near Woorndoo on Friday morning.
The truck, carrying more than 400 sheep, rolled on the notorious bend on the Woorndoo Road near the intersection of the Mortlake-Ararat Road.
Sergeant Brendan Vann, of the Ararat police, said the driver, believed to be unfamiliar with the area, had lost control in the single vehicle accident.
“It’s a notorious stretch for trucks,” Sergeant Vann said.
A number of sheep died from the impact, while others which were injured were euthanised.
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning attended and helped to herd the remaining 300 sheep into a nearby paddock.
The driver escaped uninjured.
The road was closed for about half an hour while the sheep were rounded up and then one lane was reopened to traffic.
Sergeant Vann urged drivers to drive to the road conditions.
“I’d encouraged drivers to be aware of the signage that is in place there,” he said.
