Jessica Grimble becomes the ninth editor of the masthead across its 58-year history.
She returns to Horsham this week after a two-year tenure as deputy editor at The Standard in Warrnambool.
Her journalism career also includes leadership positions at the Shepparton News and the Bendigo Advertiser.
Grimble said she was proud to follow in the footsteps of former Mail-Times editor Rod Case and stalwart Keith Lockwood, who she says were influential in her formative years.
"Since my early years as a cadet journalist, I have strived to become the editor of my home-town paper,” Grimble said.
“It's great to be back.
"I am proud to have grown up in this beautiful part of the country, at Brimpaen, with sheep in my backyard and the Grampians at the front door.
"I understand what makes this region tick.
“My love for the Wimmera has remained a constant, despite many years away."
Grimble said the pride people in the Wimmera showed for their community was a shining light.
"The sense of community and the friendliness of Wimmera people is a rare and precious asset,” she said.
"Becoming immersed within the community again, while telling the stories that matter to Wimmera people, is something I very much look forward to."
The Mail-Times started in 1959 after a merger of the 86-year-old Horsham Times and the once Natimuk-based West Wimmera Mail, which moved to Horsham in 1956.
Grimble said the media industry was constantly changing, as technology and the needs and wants of readers evolved.
"But our commitment to our readers and the community remains as it’s always been,” she said.
"Our team will continue to provide relevant and timely news to our readers – that is what we’re here for.
“We will also provide the news to our readers in new ways than ever before, both online and in print.
"Ultimately, we aim to uphold the long and proud legacy of this masthead as the voice of the Wimmera since 1873."
Grimble said readers could contact her at the office in Baillie Street, Horsham on 5362 0000 or email jess.grimble@fairfaxmedia.com.au
