Two Moyston Fire Brigade crews responded to the fire and quickly had it under control.
The beekeeper had been smoking his bees when the fire started.
Brigade captain David Coad said if the fire had burnt another 40m it would have been out of control.
“We got there before it spread into the bush, but it wouldn’t have taken much more and it would have been off into the scrub,” he said.
“We were there for about 30 minutes, if it had of traveled another 30 or 40 metres, it would have been into the scrub, a lot more work and extremely difficult.
“A quick response by the brigade and a little bit of luck kept it to just under a hectare.”
Mr Coad said it was a timely reminder of the extreme fire risk for Grampians residents, despite rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“Everything is really dry and it doesn’t take long to take off,” he said.
