WIMMERA residents are ditching the drink next month and putting their bad habits on notice as a part of FebFast.
Wimmera’s Drug Action Taskforce’s Sally Pymer called on all residents to take break from sugar, alcohol or something else for the month of February to promote better health and support disadvantaged young people.
“A month without alcohol can reduce your risk of long term health problems such as heart disease,” she said.
“Overindulging on alcohol can lead to a build-up of toxins in the body.
“This can cause your organs, tissues, and essential systems to become overtaxed.
“By taking a break from alcohol this can allow your system to have a much-needed reboot.
“People giving up alcohol for the month should enjoy health benefits like better energy levels, improved sleep, fat loss, and reduced risk of longer-term illnesses like heart disease.”
Ms Pymer said fundraisers like FebFast boost confidence, health and help break bad habits.
“Last year those involved found the challenge very rewarding,” she said.
“Some gave up alcohol, sugar, coffee or technology and noticed changes to their health throughout the month including a loss of weight.
“As a result some have changed their behaviours permanently.
“Just knowing you have given something up for the month can do wonders for your self esteem and confidence.
“There are many benefits of being involved.”
Ms Pymer said giving up sugar, fast food or technology could also have far reaching benefits.
“Sugar is hidden in many foods and the more you have, the more you want,” she said.
“Many would be surprised to hear how much sugar can be included in foods such as sauces, cereals, muesli bars and drinks.
“Many who participated in Febfast have found it easy to lose weight when cutting sugar from their diet.
“Energy levels have increased too and not decreased as many may think.
“People may have other habits they would like to work on for the month of February.
“This may include such things as giving up fast food, social media, technology, driving to work, soft drink, coffee, television or chocolate.
“You may lose weight, save money, spend more quality time with your family and notice additional benefits.”
Ms Pymer said if interested in being involved you can sign up at http://febfast.org.au/
