Marketing manager Leanda Elliot said Horsham and Stawell libraries both hosted fun-filled activities, with Birchip, Dimboola and Edenhope libraries holding a summer reading club, with prizes.
“We think it’s important to host activities, it give parents alternatives for children if they don’t want to do other things available,” she said.
“It’s important to encourage children to come to the library and read so we try to hold a range of activities on school holidays.”
Ms Elliot said reading and exposure to libraries helps children gain vital skills, that carry into their adult life.
“Reading and being literate is the foundation you need to get on in life,” she said. “We’re starting a new program 1000 Book Before School aimed at early literacy aimed to address the fact a significant number of people are considered not to have sufficient literacy to operate in the modern world.
“It’s important literacy is developed at an early age and that children enjoy reading and keep reading over the holiday period, so they don’t lose skills they’ve gained.”
