Mountainside Wines owners Jane and Shane Goninon have been dealing with the disease for 10 years after Mr Goninon’s mum Betty was diagnosed with it.
Since then the 80-year-old Tasmanian resident has been treated for breast and lung cancer. Now the couple is hosting a Boobling Art Competition, where competitors will be given doodle of a breast, which they must turn into artwork.
Prizes will be awarded to artists with the best portrait, landscape, most fun and best overall work at the event on February 18.
Mrs Goninon said she and her husband were idly drawing when they first thought of the concept.
“We were doodling one day thinking how we might support breast cancer, and make it a bit of fun and raise hopefully, lots of money,” she said.
“This is the first time we have had something like this – the Breast Cancer Support Network is a fantastic organisation.
“It is there for the people with breast cancer, but not just them, also their families.”
Doctors gave Betty different treatment options to deal with the cancer.
Managing the disease became the preferred option rather than surgery or other treatments.
Mrs Goninon said that had turned out to be a good decision.
“It is something that she will live with and manage, she's 80 now and for the moment, it is managed pretty well,” she said.
“There is a whole emotional journey you take when you take the route with surgery.
“For her they caught it at the right time and she didn’t have to go through that part of the journey.”
The event will be judged by Mrs Australia winner Leila Sweeney-McDougall and cost $25 to enter.
Wine tasting, lunch and a glass of Mountainside wine are included.
Mr Goninon said tickets can be booked by calling 5354 3279 or online at eventbrite.com.au/e/boobling-art-competition-tickets-26854121400
