Major Diane Romari said the appeal was all about the Wimmera community giving back.
“Last year we received almost 800 gifts and then we handed the gifts out over a two-week period,” she said.
The Salvation Army distributes the gifts to families with complete confidentiality.
“(Parents) get to go around the room and pick out what they want for their children,” Major Romari said.
“They go in one door and out the other so no one actually ever sees anybody.
“It’s the community helping the community – it’s great.”
Other Wimmera organisations are also helping the appeal, including Horsham Kmart’s Christmas gift tree and the St Brigid’s College Giving Tree.
Major Romari said it was great that students from the college were supporting the initiative.
“It’s really a teaching thing. It teaches them to work together for a cause that stays within their community,” she said.
“That’s the uniqueness of Horsham. We are a tight-knit community.”
The Salvation Army will continue to donate gifts to the Wimmera community until Christmas day.
Major Romari said anyone that wanted to donate a gift could visit the Horsham Salvation Army on Kalkee Road or go to the Christmas tree at Horsham Kmart. She said people could also phone 5382 1770 for more information.
