Arts council president Simon Dandy said the auditions were competitive as 148 people tried out for about 60 roles

“It’s a very strong cast. There are new faces and familiar faces,” he said.

“Its a good mix of ages: we’ve got a guy in his 70s and a girl who’s nine years old.

“It’s awesome.”

The 1977 Broadway musical follows the story of Annie, an 11-year-old ward of the state who finds fame while trying to reunite with her parents.

Mr Dandy said the lead role of Annie was demanding, which was why the council had cast two people.

“They’ll share the role, they sang it well, they acted well and they can move. We’re really happy,” he said.

“With 148 people auditioning, everybody earned their position,” he said.

“There was a lot of competition, but that’s a good thing. It shows we are in a very good spot.”

Mr Dandy said it was hard for the casting directors to draw the line. 

“I know that means a lot of people miss out, we’ve all been there and we understand that they’re hurting a bit,” he said.

“But the good thing is that the overwhelming feedback, even from people who missed out, was that they really enjoyed the process and thanked us for the opportunity.”

The cast will have their first meeting on Saturday and the final production will be in May.
