The University Blues took on the Adelaide Storm in both the men’s and women’s competition over two contrasting days of volleyball at the Horsham Basketball Stadium.
The Blues won three sets to love in men’s match on Saturday but the Storm bounced back to win in five sets on Sunday, winning the final set 15-12.
In the women’s matches the Blues proved too strong for the Storm on both days.
Saturday saw the side win 3-0 but the Storm managed to secure a set on the second day of play, going down 3-1.
This year players from the university side also took time out on Sunday morning to run a clinic with 20 junior players.
Horsham Volleyball Academy coach David Berry said it was a great chance for the the association’s players to be exposed to the higher level.
“It hopefully fuels their enthusiasm for the game. It gives them the opportunity to hear from someone different,” he said.
“All four teams were really engaging with the kids in between the games, and that was a little bit different from last year. It was also good for the parents to see the pathway for their kids.” Berry said the volunteers did a great job in making sure it was good experience for everyone involved.
“The players were talking about the home cooked meals they got last year,” he said.
“They don’t normally get that when they go away, and they don’t normally have so many kids watching.
“I did a count and with all the kids doing the lines and such, there was over 50 volunteers.
“That just underlines the strength of the association.”
Berry said the association would continue to make itself available for more fixtures in the future as long as it continued to attract sponsors.
