The Wimmera Legacy Fleece Championships were on again at the show on Sunday.
Legatee Bill McGrath said overall it was a good day.
”Fleece numbers were down mainly because of the wet weather – a lot of graziers haven’t been able to get their sheep shorn,” he said.
“From a show point of view though it was a very successful event.”
Mr McGrath said winners were awarded for super fine, fine and medium wool merino fleeces.
“The quality of the fleeces are always good at the show,” he said.
“There are a lot of good breeders and good graziers around.”
Fleeces are often donated to Wimmera Legacy after the show.
Wimmera Legacy then sell them to raise money for the organisation.
Mr McGrath said while numbers were down at the show, he expected producers would still donate fleeces throughout spring.
“Legacy has a responsibility for welfare support to 265 widows across the Wimmera,” he said.
“There is a constant need for Legacy to be raising money to make sure that those who are looking for support get assistance.”
The first Wimmera Legacy fleece show was at Horsham Town Hall in 1952.
Momentum for the show grew with more than 1000 fleeces entered in 1957.
The show ran until 2000 when it went into recession.
After 12 years, the show was back up and running in 2012. Wimmera Legacy partnered with the Horsham Show for the competition from 2014.
