THE Horsham Saints gave its all in a thrilling grand final against Ararat on Saturday.
It was goal-to-goal action as both sides put on defensive pressure, utilised turnovers and maintained accuracy in the goals.
Both teams were equally strong in the first three quarters of the game until the Saints managed to take a defining lead in the final quarter.
The rain was pouring down as the players endured slippery conditions, but the game remained action packed.
It was a tough battle until the final five minutes of play when the Saints pushed forward and blew Ararat off the court, 37-24.
Saints coach Elly Barnett commended her team on playing through the tough conditions.
“It was an all round team effort, everyone played brilliantly,” she said.
“That is the beauty of a grand final, everyone plays so well and that is exactly what happened today.
“To be able to play through that and play really well is a massive credit to the girls.”
Rats coach Grace Molloy said she was proud of her side’s efforts.
“We could not do it with the premiership but I am equally proud of the girls,” she said.
Barnett said her team has come a long way this season.
“I am extremely proud, they have trained really hard,” she said.
“I am so proud just to be here and to be holding the shield for the girls.
“To have the win alongside the senior boys as well is absolutely amazing.”
Molloy said the Saints’ defence was one of its best assets against the Rats.
“Our defenders played really well against the Saints’ strong shooters,” she said.
“The defenders shut them down and our own shooting end was on song as well.”
Saints’ Kate Story was named best on court for her midcourt work.
“Kate played centre for the whole game which is a massive credit to her,” she said.
“She just goes about her job really well. She opens up space and brings the ball down for everyone.
“She keeps calm on the court, the award is very well deserved.”
Barnett said the Saints were excited after securing the win.
“We came into the grand final confident but didn’t think we would win by that much so we will go out there tonight and have a good celebration.”
