The Tour de l’Avenir, Tour of the Future in English, is a road race run over eight stages for riders under the age of 23 who ride in national teams. In the span of eight days, cyclists raced 895 kilometres through France as part of 18 teams.
The final stage was 72 kilometres and after nearly two and half hours, Hamilton finished just nine seconds behind stage winner Neilson Powless from the US.
Hamilton finished in 39th place overall on the tour, 46 minutes behind the winner.
In the mountain classification, Hamilton finished on top of the points tally by four points.
Australia claimed the team classification ahead of the French team.
Prior to the tour, Hamilton told cyclingnews.com he had a day-by-day mindset. “It’s definitely the biggest tour, so everyone is in their best form. I’ll have to wait and see how I match up,” he said.
