As welcome as a wet winter has been, it has been lovely to see some glimpses of an impending spring and, as mayor, I can’t help but get caught up in local excitement about footy finals. I’d be happy to be proved wrong, but I suspect that this would be the first time ever that the minor premiers from both the Wimmera and Horsham District Football leagues have both come from the Yarriambiack Shire.

As sad as it was to see the end of the Mallee Football League, from my perspective it has been particularly gratifying to see, not just the success of the Southern Mallee Giants, but their enthusiastic integration into the Horsham District League and the cultural connections that this brings.
My personal highlight of the home and away season was the titanic battles between the Giants and the Panthers Under 14s. With one win each and three points the total margin, they're reminiscent of the Sydney/West Coast games circa 2005/06.
As exciting as this all is, as soon as the final siren goes in September, the people of Yarriambiack, like the rest of the Wimmera-Mallee, will head into an even busier event season.
It’s a funny quirk of living in this part of the world that the realities of working around footy, hay and harvest seasons, combined with the pride, motivation, and imagination of our communities, sees an extraordinary number of fantastic events squeezed into the months of September and October.
Look out for shows in Murtoa, Minyip and Warracknabeal, the Murtoa Big Weekend and Rock Out for Rare, which is going to be massive in Brim. The Creekside BBQ Battle, the Beulah Creek Junkyard and Jive, the Garage Sale Trail, the Barley Banquet, and the legendary Patchewollock Music Festival. I guarantee I’ve missed some, and that’s just the Yarriambiack Shire.
The Wimmera-Mallee is certainly the place to be in spring. In amongst all this, our Yarriambiack Youth Action Council continues to work to create exciting events for young people in the shire.
The recent battle of the bands event in Murtoa, featuring Sisters Doll, could only be described as a roaring first up success. I look forward to the regional final at the Murtoa Big Weekend.
So, get out, get involved, have fun, and finally, at the risk of being excommunicated from Rup. Go Burras! Go Giants!
