Leo and Doreen Watkins have already received letters of congratulations from Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Ripon MP Louise Staley and Wannon MP Dan Tehan.
This was followed by a presentation from Ararat Rural City mayor Paul Hooper at the weekend.
It was made after the Stawell and Ararat Cross Country Club’s annual race which has been sponsored by the Watkins since 1997.
At 84 years old Leo is a former banker, sheep farmer and gardener.
He ran for 15 years with the Stawell and Ararat Cross Country club.
He was also a long-serving secretary and president for the club.
The last of his 25 marathons was run at the age of 60 in 1993. Leo met Doreen when working with the Adelaide Savings Bank.
She said there was no great secret to the reason their marriage has lasted its 60 years.
“Just a bit of give and take on both sides,” she said.
Leo meanwhile said he had made good on his wedding vows.
“I vowed at the wedding to take care of Doreen for all of our lives together,” he said.
“And that’s just what I’ve done.”
