For years, Lake Fyans has been a popular destination for holiday makers and tourists.

It is most popular for its camping, boating and fishing, but more commonly used for Scouts, skiing, cycling and other exciting recreational activities.

Jim Leeke, chairperson of the Lake Fyans Recreation Area committee of management, is doing his best to organise an event to commemorate the occasion.

Mr Leeke and his committee want to get people involved in celebrating what has been a terrific landmark for the region.

The celebration is scheduled to for October 15 and 16.

An invitation has gone out to state Water Minister Lisa Neville to attend.

There is a large plaque set to be unveiled at the lake inlet on the afternoon of the October 16.

Groups including Scouts, the angling club, ski club, yacht club and cycling clubs from around the lake are all involved.

Mr Leeke has put a lot of time into the project and hopes that it can be a community success.

“We want it to be a large community event that everyone can be involved it,” Mr Leeke said.

“It is a great precinct for Stawell and surrounding communities and we want the whole community to come together and celebrate its centenary.”

In conjunction with the 100-year celebration, some people might have noticed a sign on one of the toilet blocks that mentions a new walking track.

The Lake Fyans committee is hopeful that a track around the entire lake will come to fruition in the not too distant future.

“The sign is from the council and it mentions the track,” Mr Leeke said.

“There is a lot of great things happening around the lake.

“Considering it has been around for 100 years it is all very exciting.”

The lake’s construction began in 1914 and was completed in 1916.

The surface area at full supply is 530 hectares and the depth at maximum level is 6.7 metres.
