All of the grounds for the league’s fast approaching finals series were decided on Monday night at an association meeting.
It will also be the first time Horsham Demons have had an opportunity to cater or run a booth at the grand final since 1996.
Demons chairman Rod Dumesny said the decision was quite welcome.
“I believe city oval is the best oval in the league at the moment,” he said.
“It will have had plenty of rest before the day as well.
“We play there this weekend but then there is no football scheduled there for five weeks at this point.”
Many of grounds in the Wimmera have been adversely affected by recent wet weather.
City oval’s improved drainage, in conjunction with its hardworking groundsmen, has allowed it to remain in good condition.
AFL Wimmera Mallee general manager Stephen McQueen said if weather conditions remained as they were many of the league’s finals venues could be subject to change.
“That was supported by all the presidents and representatives from the clubs,” he said.
Week one of the finals will begin on August 13.
The qualifying final will be at Murtoa Recreational Reserve with the elimination final at Coughlin Park.
The first and second semi-finals will be played in Stawell and Dimboola the following week.
The semi-final grounds are interchangeable depending on Stawell’s results.
The preliminary final will be played at Alexandra Oval.
The grand final will be in Horsham on September 3.
McQueen said those were the commission’s preferred venues for the finals at this stage.
“All venues are subject to change depending on conditions and other circumstances,” he said.
