Warriors not only competed in the early stages of the match they were on top for the first three quarters.
They broke down the run and carry from the Saints midfield and played hard contested football.
There was stoppage after stoppage, but Stawell’s back six stood strong and repelled on almost every occasion.
Saints were held goalless in the opening term of football.
Warriors opened their account with a running goal from Ben Taylor, but from there the scoring was slow to say the least.
Saints kicked their first through Jacob Cooke Harrison.
Cooke Harrison went on to kick two goals including a sealer late in the fourth quarter.
Just four goals were kicked in the first three quarters before the flood gates opened for the home team.
Stawell Warriors coach Brad Thomas was disappointed with their performance.
“It was a well contested stoppage match of football,” Thomas said.
“I thought we were on top and in control for most of the match, but we didn't take advantage of our opportunities.”
Thomas said structurally they have a little bit to work on, but the area they fell down in was their decision making.
“They are very good behind the line and we need to hit targets and be cleaner to break their web,” Thomas said.
The Warriors were hopeful of consolidating their top three position on the ladder, but as the win went begging so did third spot.
Warriors dropped to fourth.
Saints stand in coach Alexander McRae was pleased to get a win in Shayne Breuer’s absence.
It was a big day for both clubs.
The day was a huge success and the Saints players were honoured to play in the jumper.
“It is really important to get that awareness out their and I think the overall day has been an outstanding success,” McRae said.
