The awards recognise various sections including foundation, intermediate, senior and group categories.
One student or group from each state is honoured with an award. Teacher Kylie Charlton said it was great that someone from the Goroke P-12 College had won such an award.
“We had a winner in 2014 as well so it is good to see the students working well,” she said.
“There was a ceremony and a presentation at the Deakin Edge at Federation Square.
“James Merlino, the deputy premier and minister for education, presented the students with the awards.”
Thomas earned the honour by building a chicken coop for the Goroke kindergarten student’s chickens for egg production. The grand opening of coop featured a speech from the West Wimmera Shire chief executive.
Thomas continued to support the kindergarten students and also built a cubby-house for the children to play in.
“It was great to have the connection with the school and the kindergarten take place because generally the young kids aren’t always comfortable communicating with the senior students of the school,” Mrs Charlton said.
“His work really started small and then grew.”
Students are nominated by a teachers for the awards.
“The teachers have to nominate and write information about what they are doing their project on,” Mrs Charlton said.
“Then they go to a selection panel. With more than 2000 VCAL students in Victoria it is an honour to win such an award.”
Mrs Charlton said throughout the project Thomas had demonstrated professional behavior and had well and truly given back to the rural community.
