Ararat Rural City Council will host a public information session for residents who might considering standing for council in the upcoming elections.
Ararat council acting chief executive Colleen White said that standing for council is a relatively simple process, but can be daunting if you’re not certain what is required or how to nominate and campaign.
“The information session will outline the roles and responsibilities of a councillor, describe the election process, and provide useful advice for getting elected,” she said.
“I strongly encourage any residents contemplating standing for election to attend this information session.”
The information session for prospective Ararat council candidates will be held on August 10 from 6.30pm-8.30pm at Council Chambers.
Speakers from neighbouring councils, and the Municipal Association of Victoria will provide information about the council area, and advice on who can nominate, how to nominate, and what is required of a councillor.
A video presentation will assist prospective candidates to gain an understanding of what the public will expect of councillors, and their time commitments, challenges and rewards.
Northern Grampians Shire Council elections will be held on October 22 and seven councillor positions across four wards will be contested.
Kara Kara Ward will be represented by two Councillors, South West Ward by one Councillor, Central Ward by one Councillor and Stawell Ward by three Councillors.
The elections will be run by the Victorian Electoral Commission and all ballots will be collected by postal vote.
Voting is compulsory for ratepayers and you may be fined if you do not vote.
Northern Grampians Shire has urged ratepayers to make sure your voice is heard this October.
Horsham Rural City Council will also face an election in October.
Horsham council will run a Community and Candidate Information Session on Thursday from 6.30pm at Horsham Civic Centre for people who might consider standing for election to council in October.
