He landed in Horsham after a 15-minute flight from Stawell, where he began the Wimmera part of his election day campaign.

Mr Broad distributed how-to-vote cards to voters at Horsham Country Women’s Association hall and at Horsham Primary School.

“There’s not much vote card competition at the Country Women’s Association booth,” Mr Broad said.

It was also Mr Broad’s 41^st birthday on Saturday.

His daughter bought him a mug with a message that he was a great dad.

“Win or lose the election, we’re eating cake,” Mr Broad said.

Mr Broad said voters told him that federal funding for a new oncology centre had helped boost their support for the Nationals in Mallee.

“Horsham had the worst five-year survival rates for cancer and it was the federal government that gave $1 million and the community gave $1 million,” Mr Broad said.

“Things like are what people remember.”

Mr Broad said the overall federal election result would be close and it would be a long night in some seats before a winner could be called.

“I have been texting today some of my colleagues and I received a text from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull,” he said.

“We’ll all be watching the results and keeping our fingers crossed for a Coalition win.”

State Nationals Member for Lowan Emma Kealy helped organise Mr Broad’s election day campaign in Horsham.

She said a lot of people had expressed their concerns about the dispute between the CFA and the state government.

Mr Broad said he had been told by voters that they were using their federal vote to express an opinion on the state CFA issue.

Labor candidate for Mallee Lydia Senior and Greens candidate Helen Healy concentrated their election day efforts in the northern half of the seat.
