League chief commissioner Trevor Albrecht said he was pleased with Delahunty’s performance as a player and coach.
“The board came together and we were rapt with the side’s performance,” he said.
“It is a big job especially for a player-coach so it was good to see John choose a great coaching staff to help him select and train the team.”
Albrecht said Delahunty was a great leader on and off the field.
“Players enjoy his presence, he has such a strong report with all of the players,” he said.
“They will support him to the hilt.”
Albrecht said he hoped next year would be a home game for the side
“As it stands it looks like we will be playing against the Murray league,” he said.
“I am sure we will take on whoever we face.
“The coaching staff were exceptional too.”
Delahunty said he looked forward to getting another chance to coach and play for the team.
“This is an exciting time for Wimmera footy,” he said.
“The side we had this year were quite close and have played football in the Wimmera their entire lives.
“Most have played together before in the representative side as well as domestically.”
Delahunty said he was proud of the footballers in region.
“We have a great group of exciting, honest footballers and the results have shown that,” he said.
“Murray would be a great contest and if we win the next couple of years it won’t be long until we are in the top 10 again.”
The Wimmera interleague side is ranked 16th out of the 38 teams in Victoria.
Murray Football League is 15th.
“It is a huge opportunity for the players in the league who love this high standard of football,” Delahunty said.
“Everyone who played this year will get another opportunity next year to be part of the squad.
“I hope there will be more players to chose from next year,”
Young players who have been establishing themselves as senior footballers like Ben Miller and Jackson Taurau will be in the sights of Delahunty.
“It is very exciting all of the good young players coming through,” he said.
“In terms of my support, my coaching staff is very valuable to me being a playing-coach.
“They are a great asset.”
