ARARAT and Stawell are set for a cold weekend with frost on Saturday and Sunday mornings and snow in the Grampians.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Keris Arndt said there would be a big cold air coming through.
Ararat should see similar cold and wet weather that is forecast for the rest of Wimmera.
The bureau has predicted snow in the Grampians, possibly beginning from Thursday but more likely early Friday morning.
“There will be snow down to 500 metres. Mount William is higher than 1000 metres so you should see snow in the Grampians,” Mr Arndt said.
“Snow should clear up early during the morning so get up to the Grampians if you want to see snow.
“The biggest thing is the cold air, it will be cold and windy.”
Ararat township will probably miss out on direct snow fall.
“It will be much the same throughout western Victoria: rain, cold, showers, thunder,” Mr Arndt said.
“The snow is not likely to hit Ararat itself but in nearby hills.
“The snow will be down down to 500 metres, Ararat isn’t that high but snow should fall on the hills to the east and west.
Stawell is likely to see the same weather as Ararat, but with less chance of snow.
“I don’t know the area that well, so I’d say the Grampians would be your best bet for snow,” Mr Arndt said.
“It might get cold enough but there might not be enough precipitation for snow to fall.”
Grampians Gariwerd Area Chief Ranger David Roberts said snow-seeking visitors should take care, pack the right clothing and plan for delays.
“The roads are icy and often treacherous in these weather conditions. Slow down, take your time, be visible and be prepared,” he said.
“Car parking is very limited at Mount William and Boroka Lookout, be careful and conscious of where you park and how this impacts on your safety and others
“Be cautious as high winds are forecast and can result in tree fall and other road hazards.”
Today’s showers around Horsham should clear by later in the morning after beginning at about sunrise.
Saturday’s maximum is set to be 12 degrees following a frost.
“I’d say there’d be frost on Sunday but not as widespread as on Saturday,” Mr Arndt said
Horsham is set for a chilly night on Saturday with widespread frost following a chance of showers, thunder and hail today.
“Saturday night is going to be really cold. Down to minus one degree overnight,” Mr Arndt said.
