It has been involved with the Smiles 4 Miles program, which addresses the key messages of oral health through curriculum activities and family engagement.
The program is for kindergarten children.
It was developed by Dental Health Services Victoria and implemented in partnership with Grampians Pyrenees Primary Care Partnership through the Northern Grampians, Ararat and Pyrenees regions.
Services win the Smiles 4 Miles award by implementing healthy eating and oral health policies, engaging with families about the importance of oral health.
It educates children through a variety of fun learning experiences based on key messages including, drink well, eat well and clean well.
Willaura Kindergarten has fulfilled the award criteria for the Smiles 4 Miles program and is continuing the second of this two-year award program in 2016.
The three steps to maintaining healthy gums for children are;
- Drinking tap water or plain milk and avoid sugary drinks like cordials, juices and soft drinks
- Eating a variety of nutritious foods each day and limiting sugary foods, particularly between meals
- Brushing teeth twice a day while adults should help children until they are seven..
