Wotjobaluk elders have created TCHINGAL – Stories of Wotjobaluk Country with regional artists, Wimmera residents and school students.
Visiting artists from Sydney-based arts company Erth have also worked on the project.
Festival director Adelle Rohrsheim said the performance, which Ken Evans and Rebecca Russell would direct, would bring Wimmera Aboriginal stories to life.
“These stories will be told using large-scale puppets and interactive animations, all while the theatre stage is shared by elders, actors, students and Tchingal,” she said.
“People will experience Wimmera dreamtime stories and explore Wimmera identities, traditions and connections to place.”
Mrs Rohrsheim said the project built on the 2015 Culti-vat and 2014 Museum of Lands Past in the third and final year of a three-year collaboration between invited visual and physical Erth artists.
Erth members Scott Wright, Aesha Henderson, and Andrew Blizzard will collaborate with Wimmera artists Nichola Clarke and Claudia Haenel, internationally recognised animator Dave Jones and sound artist Robbie Millar for the performance.
Mrs Rohrsheim said Creative Victoria, Australia Council, Grampians Indigenous Family Violence Regional Action Group, Barengi Gadjin Land Council, Grampian Arts, Grampians Community Health and Wimmera Primary Care Partnership had provided support for the project.
She said tickets for the show in the town hall theatre on June 11 and 12 were $20 for a family of four, $10 for adults and $5 for concession and people under 15.
She said people could visit the town hall box office in Pynsent Street or www.horshamtownhall.com.au to book.
The June 11 show starts at 8pm, and the show the next day starts at 2pm.
Mrs Rohrsheim said festival organisers were also looking forward to an ‘Art Play Sunday’ event as part of the festival.
She said the event would involve an afternoon of family entertainment and activities at the Horsham Town Hall on June 5.
The Wimmera Women’s Circus will be among the performances on the day.
This year’s Art is… festival will run at various locations from June 3 to 12.
