He was first spotted driving dangerously on Montgomery and Tobin Streets in Ararat, before he lost control of the vehicle a short distance away on Churchill Street.
The crash saw the man hit a tree on a nature strip and cause extensive damage to his car.
Ararat police Sergeant Matthew Cashman said residents reported the crash.
“Police were alerted by local residents and as a result arrested and interviewed a man in relation to reckless conduct endangering person, drink driving and other traffic offences,” he said.
“The man was released pending further investigations.”
Sgt Cashman said it was lucky no one had been hurt.
“Police applaud the local residents who supplied information to assist the investigation and subsequent arrest,” he said.
“This serves as warning to motorists and hoon drivers who might put the community at risk.”
