However, it was short-lived and players were soon shedding jumpers in the heat of battle.
Greg McInnes and Mike Connellan quickly adapted to go out to a big lead. Mike's ball toss was perfect and they posted a 9-3 victory. Phil Goudie and Nathan Kuchel came back strongly in the next set to win 8-4.
Ben Hartwich also realised it was time to lift, combining with his more experienced brother, Chris, to win 7-5, reducing the gap to three games.
A win to Greg McInnes and Phil Hartwich 7-2 helped Mitre 10 to an eight game victory.
Ed Bush and Tim Hartwich showed the effect of their parents' coaching, going down 2-9. In the next two sets’ both boys ignored the wisdom of their elders as they won 8-2 and 8-1.
Gasons lifted in the last two sets under the leadership of Geoff White and Al Tehan to win both sets 6-4. Although in the end, Fosters held on to win by three games.
In the third match, Rural Steel prevailed by ten games.
This was due in no small part to the all round game of Morgan Gason playing his last match before moving to Melbourne. His dad will be pleased to see the last of him after finding Morgan in red hot form.
It is rumoured that Morgan will be replaced by a Louis Robinson look alike. Carl Barry performed well for McDonald's in the first two sets.
Fosters Mensland lead the comp with 16 points, followed by a bevy of teams on 12 points.
