Western Highway project director Mick McCarthy said the work was the final tree clearing needed to complete the bypass.
He said VicRoads and a contractor had reduced the number of trees to be removed from about 200 to 65. He said the trees ranged in size from saplings to larger trees.
“At the request of environmentalists, we have counted all trees and not just large old trees as outlined in the environmental effects statement,” he said.
“Although we would like to save all the trees, these trees need to be removed for the road to be widened so that this existing highway can become the east-bound two-lane highway.”
The bypass is expected to be completed by mid-2016.
