Ararat RSL president Frank Neulist spoke at the brief, but poignant, Remembrance Day service. Community groups laid wreaths following Mr Neulist’s address.
Mr Neulist paid tribute to those Australian men who volunteered to fight and died on the battlefield in Europe, Turkey and the Middle East.
“And let us not forget our friends from the across the water – the New Zealanders, who were with us every step of the way,” he said.
“World War I was supposed to be the war that ended all wars; but sadly, that was not the case.”
European hostilities officially paused at 11am on the 11th of November, 1918 and since then, Mr Neulist said the 11th of the 11th has become a symbolic time of peace.
“Starting in 1919, countries around the world have paused for a minute’s silence to remember those who sacrificed themselves for our freedom.”
