Cameron will join the Burras as a senior assistant coach in 2016, opting to leave the Hawks and the Mininera District Football Netball League.
The versatile, athletic player was a standout for Tatyoon and the league in 2015, claiming the Lewis Medal for the league’s best and fairest player.
Cameron had plenty to weigh up in terms of choosing his preferred destination in 2016, with a number rival Wimmera league clubs showing interest in the star player.
But on Tuesday night, Cameron put pen to paper in a deal that will boost the Burras’ chances of lifting a premiership cup in 2016.
Minyip-Murtoa president Andy Delahunty said it was a comfortable decision for the now former Hawk to make.
“We approached him about it but he had to weigh up about leaving Tatyoon, because he was doing a good job there,” he said.
“And a lot of clubs had shown interest, but we were really confident.
“What we offered him was a great family club with a fair bit of upside as a team.”
Mr Delahunty said Cameron and his partner had friends at the club, which he believes helped with the decision to join the Burras.
“We were aware that they had close friends at the club. The travelling he was doing was really hard,” he said.
“We’re a team that’s pretty desperate to get into a grand final and hopefully win a grand final.
“He knows we’ve got a really good playing list that’s holding together really well.
“It’s about being comfortable about the decision you make.”
Cameron booted 27 goals for the Hawks in a year that saw them fall just shy of a flag in the Mininera district league.
Mr Delahunty said the Burras were excited about the experience he would bring.
“We’re rapt with his experience. He’ll be terrific,” he said.
“He’s a quality footballer, a versatile player, and a goal-kicker as well.
“It’s just that experience on the ground and the leadership that we’re really looking forward to.”
The Cameron recruit is one of the biggest gets for a Wimmera league club so far in the off-season, but the Burras are understood to have other big names on their radar.
