In 1959 the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s album, ‘Time Out’ became the first platinum jazz recording and its single, ‘Take Five’, remains the highest selling jazz instrumental of all time.
This show tells the remarkable story of this legendary West Coast American jazz pianist, composer and band leader and is propelled by the extraordinary musicianship of the acclaimed Brendan Fitzgerald Quartet.
Brendan Fitzgerald narrates Brubeck's life story through the eyes of 1950s radio presenter, Jimmy Lyons, who helped launch his remarkable career. The story is presented as a radio broadcast with Brendan also narrating at the piano. Key Brubeck compositions are played using authentic transcriptions from the quartet's famous albums.
Adelaide-based Fitzgerald is a classical and jazz composer, pianist and music theatre performer working in Australia, Europe and Asia. His quartet features noted alto saxophonists, Andy Firth, Peter Raidel and Jon Hunt, each who have performed the challenging music of legendary frontman Paul Desmond. The quartet also comprises Quinton Dunne on double bass and Satomi Ohnishi on drums.
The show is currently touring nationally. Tickets to 'Take Five: The Dave Brubeck Story' can be purchased from the Ararat Performing Arts Centre Box Office or by phoning 5352 2181.
