This year’s theme was “books light up our world.”

One of the most popular activities for Book Week is children dressing up in various costumes in honour of their favourite characters. Popular choices include Little Red Riding Hood and Cat in the Hat, as shown by St Andrews Kindergarten children.
Elsa from the movie Frozen, characters from the Harry Potter series and Where’s Wally? are also among childrens’ favourites.
Although there is a fear that books are no longer popular due to the digital age, Book Week proves this is not the case.
It is also a week used to promote Australian authors and illustrators, with teachers creating displays with their students as well as organising colouring competitions, trivia quizzes and book parades.
Schools also play movies that relate back to the books and have authors come along to speak to students about their ideas. Secondary students also work with primary school students in reading activities, which a positive experience for both groups. Teachers and kinder staff are encouraged to dress up and join in the fun.
