The upgrade will see the feature race carry a total prize money of $30,000 (up $5,000).
The Clive Reid Memorial Trotters Cup hasn’t been forgotten either, also receiving a prize money boost from $10,000 to $12,000.
Ararat Harness Racing secretary Lloyd Grice said the Group 3 status is a first for the local club.
“This increase can be viewed as the result of a lot of hard work and the wonderful local support our club receives and I thank everyone — owners, trainers, drivers and patrons and staff,” he said.
The 2015 Pacing Cup meeting was held over the Easter long weekend and attracted a big crowd. The club this week donated some of the gold coin money from the gate to the Ararat Men’s Shed.
Tonight is the first meeting back at the Russell T White Raceway since the Easter event. Action kicks off at 5.28pm.
