This year the Central Victorian Apiarists Association has chosen to hold a beekeepers picnic on Sunday, May 17, at the soon to be reopened Capilano honey factory, in Capilano Drive, Maryborough, from 10am to 3pm.
The picnic will have displays, including some live hives, which weather permitting will be open. There will also be some bees in a bee cage, whatever the weather.
Visitors will be able to hear about Capilano's plans to reopen the Maryborough honey factory for honey deliveries and packing. Tasting of some of the honey products will also be offered.
There will be lots of information and advice for someone thinking of getting a beehive or just starting out, but also things of interest for people that would just like to know more about bees.
Displays and stalls will include information on bee diseases to be aware of, the new biosecurity plan for the bee industry, beekeeping and hive products, general industry information and other products from beehives such as wax. There will be plenty of undercover area if the weather is not great on the day.
Bees not only produce honey and wax products, they also help to produce around 65 per cent of all the food we eat. Many nuts, fruit, vegetables and lots of other foods that we enjoy every day would not be available to us without honey bee pollination.
Entry to the picnic will be $5 per adult, free for children, which will include entry to prize draws drawn on the day. A bbq lunch including drink will be available for $10 adults and $5 for children.
Tea and coffee will be provided throughout the day. There will also be some activities to keep any children entertained.
