One hundred and fifty businesses and community leaders from the Central Highlands region recently attended a 'Leading Change Luncheon' at Sovereign Hill to promote awareness and talk about the actions required to address violence against women.
The luncheon was co-ordinated by WHG with the support of local partners Leadership Ballarat and Western Region, Commerce Ballarat and the Australian Industry Group.
It was an opportunity to learn more about the underlying causes of violence against women and what leaders need to do to create safe and equitable communities and workplaces.
"As the incidence of violence against women continues to increase in our region, we all need to consider what role we can play," Michelle Hunt, Act@Work Project Manager at Women's Health Grampians said.
"We work closely with organisations to deliver a program which promotes a safer and respectful work environment.
"Businesses such as the Ballarat Courier and Ballarat Community Health have noted considerable improvement in gender equity and workplace harmony since engaging Act@Work.
"We want more businesses in the region to take responsibility in this area. We will continue to support and promote our partners that participate in Act@Work as proactive leaders in our community."
The money raised at the event will also go to helping women and children whose lives have been affected by family violence.
Elizabeth Jewson, Executive Officer from WRISC Family Violence Support said everyone has the right to be safe.
"The donation of $750 will be used to support our programs that assist many women and children who are victims of family violence in the Ballarat region," she said.
Act@Work is a comprehensive, organisation-wide, cultural change program challenging sexism, discrimination and violence against women.
The program addresses workplace leadership, policies and procedures and promotes partnerships and links to the community to encourage workplaces to contribute to safer and more respectful communities.
Act@Work also develops individual skills to take action and intervene safely and effectively.
The Act@Work program can be undertaken by any organisation that has leadership commitment to addressing the causes of violence against women.
