District 16 operations officer, Ian Morley said at about 3pm on Tuesday afternoon the Ararat Fire Brigade received a report of a fire behind the Harris Accident Repair Centre in Banksia Street, Ararat.
"Two units and approximately 10 fire fighters responded and a small fire was found behind the premises where they had been undertaking the burning off of some old rubbish," he said.
"The fire had crept under a fence on the property and also got into some other rubbish on the other side, including rubber, plastics and old bumper bars and pieces of vehicle."
Mr Morley said there was no danger at anytime to the Harris Accident Repair Centre building structure and the fire was quickly brought under control within 30 minutes.
Ararat Police also attended the scene and helped to direct traffic.
"There was a small quantity of black smoke that a lot of people saw and reported, which of course we thank them for, because we always take the opportunity to ask people if they are going to burn off to consider what they are burning and the needs of their neighbours as well," Mr Morley said.
