Rotary is currently building a barbecue shelter in Emu Park, on the corner of Vincent and Viewpoint Streets.
Rotarian Ron McCormick said historically the area once housed an animal park, including emus, hence the name.
Rotarians are currently constructing the shelter which will house an electric barbecue, as well as a drinks fountain which will include a tap for a pet water bowl.
"The facilities will enable families to sit down and have a barbecue," Mr McCormick said.
"It will be the only one on the south side of Ararat. There are plenty over at Alexandra Gardens, but not this side.
"Quite a few caravans stop here."
The project has been supported by Pacific Hydro and Ararat Rural City Council, and is expected to cost in the vicinity of $20,000.
"We are also planning on having a civic map on the back wall of the shelter ... which will point out tourist features in the town," Mr McCormick said.
It is hoped the project will be completed within the next six to eight weeks and Rotary will then hold a free sausage sizzle to officially open the project.
