Ararat Rural City Mayor Cr Paul Hooper said the purpose of the event was to get the community together for the formal dedication of a permanent memorial that honours the Maroona and district soldiers.
"This event relied very much on community participation with the assistance of many local organisations," Cr Hooper said.
"Not only were the local communities of Ararat and Maroona involved, but people who had left the area returned to attend the event and were very impressed to see the memorial highlighted for the community.
"The event demonstrated participation and social opportunities and inclusion into the community with the outcome strengthening resolve. It also showed great determination by the local community to come together to enhance and highlight such a worthy initiative.
"This year the event was a huge success for both the organisers as well as the rural community."
Cr Hooper said he took great pleasure in awarding the 2015 Community Event of the year award to the Maroona Recreation Reserve Committee.
