'Organic Intimacy' pays tribute to the delicate and tender stitched works of Louise Bourgeois. A quiet and intense approach to the exploration of the relationship between stitch, thought and word is revealed by ten women artists working with a range of textile related processes.
Thirty years since the publication of Rozsika Parker's groundbreaking book, 'The Subversive Stitch: embroidery and the making of the feminine' - which provided a licence for practices normally associated with female domesticity to be absorbed into the fine arts - there continues to be a growth in artists throughout the world who choose the medium of textiles to express ideas.
In this exhibition, the stitch - whether woven, printed, drawn or created with a needle - embodies conversations between people and cultures, describes beautiful but dangerous blood cells and draws our attention to the plight of refugees.
To complement the presentation of 'Organic Intimacy', four regional textile artists are presenting a wide ranging response to quilt-making traditions in the 'Integrate / Separation' exhibition.
These two sumptuous exhibitions provide a visual feast for lovers of textile art and craft.
Both exhibitions continue until November 30.
