Diana Heggie, chief executive officer at Heart Foundation Victoria, congratulated Ararat Rural City Council for its commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of the community.
"Ararat Rural City Council received the award for providing a range of initiatives to improve the health of their community and the Heart Foundation congratulates all of those involved," said Ms Heggie.
"The judges were particularly impressed with the initiatives to improve the health of the community by increasing physical activity levels."
"The awards are important because they recognise the outstanding achievements of local governments in the continuing fight against heart disease - the single biggest killer of Australian men and women."
"Local government has the power to help people lead healthier lives by introducing structural change, implementing policies and creating supportive environments that allow people to be physically active, reduce smoking and improve their nutrition."
Now in its 22nd year, the Heart Foundation Local Government Awards are still providing an opportunity for local government to celebrate its achievements and receive recognition for its commitment to creating healthier communities.
Ararat City Council is one of three local governments in Victoria recognised with a state award for initiatives that create a healthy community. Other councils include:
Cardinia Shire Council was named Victorian winner.
Wyndham City Council won Highly Commended.
