Agricultural shows have been around for over 150 years in this region and they are an important event on any town's calendar in that as well as providing fun and entertainment for families, they showcase our agricultural sector.
Farmers show off their fleeces, their livestock, their poultry, the active pony clubs demonstrate horse riding talents, and the craft and cooking sections show that skills such as sewing, embroidery, quilting, tapestry and cooking are not being lost.
In days gone by, agricultural shows were also often the only time when farmers would make the long journey into town, giving them the opportunity to 'chew the fat' with other farmers, providing much needed social connections, both for the men and women, who often lived in isolated areas with very few opportunities for interaction with other families.
They were 'time out' for families who were often doing it hard in tough conditions.
Farming is still of course a very fickle business and while there are now many more support services and opportunities for social engagement, the Show still provides a great place for entertainment, catch ups and that all important family time.
