The ALPA Young Auctioneers' Competition was held at the Victorian Livestock Exchange in Pakenham on Monday. It is part of a year round competition culminating in the country's best young auctioneers competing in the ALPA National Young Auctioneers' Competition at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 2015.
The competition was won by Zeb Broadbent of McKean McGregor, Bendigo with Nick Gray runner up. Both men have been in the auctioneers' school system for three years. They are looking forward to the experience in Sydney in March next year and will be working on their selling style up until then.
Anthony Delaney, ALPA Victorian Auctioneers' Committee member, said he was extremely pleased with the success of the day.
"The level of competition was very strong this year and the results were incredibly close. It would have been tough for the judges and I really didn't envy their job," he said.
Before the competition, more than 100 of the competitors' friends, family and industry members attended a dinner at the Rydges Hotel, Melbourne.
Shelby Howard, 2014 ALPA National Young Auctioneer, conducted the charity auction raising over $3000 for Angel Flight, a charity that coordinates non-emergency flights to get people from regional and remote areas to medical providers.
A charity livestock auction the next day also saw $5,152.50 donated to Angel Flight.
The competition provides an opportunity for the younger members of the industry to show the spectators and fans what they can do. It gives them the confidence and motivation to sell more frequently at sales, where they are based.
"The competitions are always a highlight on ALPA's event calendar," ALPA CEO Andy Madigan said.
"This year it drew the attention of some younger agents from Victoria wanting to see what happens and hoping to be selected next year. It is a great opportunity for the younger members of the industry to get involved and build on their profession."
